From Rolled Up Coathanger to Strat!
Here's a quick run down on what I've been up to on my guitar journey to give you an idea of where I'm coming from - I'm sure your adventure is just as
unique
My first 'guitar' was an unrolled coat-hanger which I used to mime to guitar solos from one Eric Bell of Thin Lizzy, in front of the wardrobe mirror in my
bedroom (sad or what :).
In fact one of the guitar pieces on the video above is an Eric Bell / Thin Lizzy riff from a song called 'The Rocker' Its one of the first tunes I ever
'coat-hangered :).
Thin Lizzy were an Irish rock band legend if you dunno of them, and one of the first Rock bands to make it big from Ireland in the 70s. Waaay before the
excellent 'legends in their own lifetime' U2 and the like.
Lizzy helped to pave the way for Irish bands to make it on the world/international stage. They formed a big influence on many a band, from Metallica to Bon
Jovi.
Metallica play Lizzy's first hit 'Whiskey in the Jar' regularly and released it as a single, and Bon Jovi chose 'The Boys Are Back in Town' as their tribute
piece. I think they were opening the show with it at one stage.
Guitar Upgrades! I upgraded from the coat hanger to a real guitar later on and haven't stopped since. Its brought me to a few places around the world to
gig and even earn a living from it. These days, I like listening to and playing all styles of guitar, and like to mix them all up where possible. From Bluesy to
Country to Jazzy to Rock, Buckethead, to Coldplay and all in between. The art of 'style without style' as one of my long time heroes Bruce Lee put it.
I keep right on learning every day and still love the instrument as I'm sure you all do - you know what I mean. Yup Fanatical is a word to be used here quite
safely! I gig locally here in Ireland these days and I've also made a few guitar related products which I sell from the site for those interested.
The likes of ebooks covering guitar effects, amplifiers, pedals, tab, performance guides, practice backing tracks, video lessons and so on..
My 'Secret' Buckethead Jam Video
Here's my 'secret' Buckethead Jam video. The 'secret'? Well its a secret to Buckethead, he doesn't know about it and wasn't even there :). Anyways, I love
Nottingham Lace, great toon (and lots of his other work), and jam over it a lot.
So I recorded one of these jams on vid, and here's the result warts 'n all. If 'The Great Bucketheaded One' ever does get 2 see it and it becomes an
'unsecret', I hope he likes it. Its my little tribute to this awesome musician. Hope u other Bucket' fans like it too! Guitanorak
Guitar Tips, Talk and Advice
As a fan and constant learner of the instrument I know us players are always on the lookout for tips and sound advice, so you'll find lots of relevant info
regarding that on the site. I've started a guitar group at Youtube (its in the early stage phase at the moment), but feel free free to join up and throw in your
few cents worth if you like - I'm called 'guitanorak' on it. All players and styles welcome (Guitar Kune Do right!). Why not upload your own solo
interpretations or whatever you come up with? The more the merrier on good ol' Youtube of course - we can share and learn from each other.
Players are also invited to sign up and join the Dream Zine Club. You get email advice on postings and info on achieving cool sounds and techniques. Free
practice backing tracks are included in the mix along with tips and info - you know the story. But I want this ezine to be different from the usual stuff you
can get. I'm working on it so bear with me lol.
I've added a blog to the site so drop in and say hello wontcha!
